Born in Sintra, Portugal (1987) Rosinha began his double bass studies at 20 years old, simultaneously enrolled at the classical music Lisbon’s National Conservatory and at Jazz School Luiz Villas-Boas / Hot Clube de Portugal, while also having private classes with Demian Cabaud.
In 2010 he participated at the Lisbon Jazz Summer School with a scholarship from Jazz School Luiz Villas-Boas, where he had the opportunity to learn from the best names from the American jazz stage, such as Danilo Perez, Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Rogerio Boccato or Rudresh Mahanthappa, and attended seminaries and masterclasses with Dave Holland, Matt Penman, Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Cheek, Jorge Rossy, Matt Renzi, Jon Irabagon, Paulinho Braga and Matt Pavolka.
In 2011, Rosinha was invited to lecture at the Jazz School Luiz Villas-Boas / Hot Clube de Portugal, where he has been a teacher ever since. He graduated in Jazz Double Bass from Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa in 2014.
“Pórtico” is the name of his first record as bandleader, where he plays his originals along with the musicians João Barradas (accordion), Albert Cirera (saxophone), Eduardo Cardinho (vibraphone) and Bruno Pedroso (drums). Well received by the critics, the album was presented at the iconic Casa da Música in Porto and also Círculo de Jazz de Setúbal.
His second record of originals, “Árvore”, with the renowned pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva and Marcos Cavaleiro on the drums, was presented at Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB, Lisbon), Seixal Jazz and Jazz 2020 Porto in a partnership with Gulbenkian. Rosinha’s third album, entitled “Triskel”, was launched on May 2022.
In addition to his project, the bassist is also a member of Salvador Sobral’s band since 2015, with whom he has recorded 5 albums, as well as of the pianist Júlio Resende’s group, João Barradas Trio, Eduardo Cardinho Quintet, Samuel Lercher Trio or Ricardo Pinto Quintet.
He has performed in several international jazz festivals, such as Jazzaldia, Festival Noches del Botánico and Cadiz Jazz Festival (Spain), Festival Au Fil des Voix (France), Reset Jazz Festival (Luxemburgo), Jazzfestival Munster and Jazzahead (Germany), Sopot Jazz Festival ̈ (Poland), Jazzkar (Estonia) and Kaunas Jazz (Lithuania). In Portugal, Rosinha is a usual presence, highlighting Funchal Jazz and Seixal Jazz.
Rosinha has played with Perico Sambeat, Greg Osby, Alexi Tuomarila, Seamus Blake, Marc Miralta, Theo Ceccaldi, Abe Rabade, Jeffery Davis, Xavi Torres, Ben Van Gelder and Roberto Negro, and with the Portuguese Mário Laginha, João Moreira, Afonso Pais or André Fernandes.
