Joaquim Rocha

Joaquim Rocha has been bass trombonist with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra since 2017. He has been invited to perform with several ensembles and orchestras, including the Galicia Symphony Orchestra, the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and the Guimarães Orchestra.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo (Porto), where he studied under Professor Severo Martinez, graduating in 2017 with the highest distinction.

Throughout his career, he has received several awards, most notably the First Prize – George Roberts Category at the International Trombone Festival Competition, held at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. In 2016, he won First Prize at the 1st International Trombone Competition in Castelo de Paiva, and in 2019, he was awarded First Prize at the Prémio Jovens Músicos, which led to a solo performance with the Gulbenkian Orchestra.

He has participated in numerous masterclasses with renowned artists such as Stefan Schulz, Ian Bousfield, Andreas Klein, David Bruchez, Jamie Williams, Jon Etterbeek, Petur Eiriksson, Filipe Alves, Gabriel Antão, Bill Thomas, and Nathan Zgonc.
