One of Portugal’s most internationally acclaimed musicians, Júlio Resende has released nine albums over a career that began in jazz and has traversed fado and the spoken word, in a continuous search for the perfect musical space that never truly exists.
After recording his first three projects as a leader in jazz trio and quartet formats, he began exploring improvisation across other musical genres, most notably fado.
Drawing on the songs of Amália Rodrigues, Júlio Resende introduced a new challenge: bringing fado to the piano. Amália por Júlio Resende, released in 2013 by Valentim de Carvalho, was unanimously praised by the entire Portuguese music press.
Following his first solo project blending fado and jazz, Resende released his fifth album in 2015, Fado & Further, featuring the Catalan singer Sílvia Pérez Cruz, one of Spain’s leading voices.
His sixth album, Poesia Homónima (2016), merges spoken word and poetry in collaboration with psychiatrist and sexologist Júlio Machado Vaz, setting poems by Eugénio de Andrade and Gonçalo M. Tavares to Resende’s improvisational piano accompaniment.
Inspired by the English poetry of Fernando Pessoa, he formed a pop-rock band with indie and electronic influences called Alexander Search, named after one of Pessoa’s most important heteronyms. The album, released in 2017, debuted at number three on the national sales chart.
Cinderella Cyborg, released in 2018, is a musical adventure combining acoustic piano, drums, and double bass with electronic sounds, pads, and synths.
In 2019, Resende performed alongside pianist Maria João Pires in a unique concert, creating a dialogue of improvisation, fantasy, and inspiration.
In 2020, he released Júlio Resende – Fado Jazz Ensemble, a unique project in the world of jazz and world music, combining a jazz trio—piano, double bass, and drums—with the Portuguese guitar, creating a dialogue between jazz and fado.
In 2022, Júlio Resende released his album “Fado Jazz” worldwide through the label ACT Music, receiving excellent acclaim from international critics. The album “Filhos da Revolução” was released in 2023 by Sony Music and ACT Music. In 2025, in duo with guitarist Bruno Chaveiro, he released his latest album, “Piano Português Namora Guitarra Portuguesa,” a new celebration of Fado Jazz.
