Marina Cabello del Castillo is a Spanish viol player, currently based in Madrid after twelve years in Basel, Switzerland.
Specializing in early music from the 16th to the 18th centuries, she has performed at many of Europe’s most prestigious early music festivals.
She began her studies in viola da gamba at the age of eight at the Conservatorio Padre Antonio Soler in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, under Jordi Comellas, where she completed her musical training with distinction. In 2013, she continued her studies at the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland with Paolo Pandolfo, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Viola da Gamba in 2016, a Master’s in Pedagogy in 2018, and a Master’s in Musical Performance in 2020. She also attended masterclasses with eminent viol players such as Jordi Savall, Vittorio Ghielmi, Wieland Kuijken, Marianne Müller, Guido Ballestracci, Rebeka Russó, and Fahmi Alqhai.
She has been invited to participate in prestigious European festivals, including the Oude Muziek Utrecht, the Festival de Musique Baroque d’Ambronay, the Festival Internacional de Arte Sacra, the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, the Festtage Alte Musik and Freunde Alter Musik in Basel, the Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay, the Festival Internacional de Santander, the Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, and the International Händel Festival Göttingen.
Marina is a member of several ensembles, including the Vivalma Ensemble, with which she won the Biagio Marini Prize in 2024, awarded by the German Viola da Gamba Society; I Discordanti, dedicated to 17th-century Italian music; Continuum XXI, focused on the dialogue between contemporary and Baroque music; and BREZZA, an ensemble that has achieved significant success on its European tours.
